Day 15:Joshua Tree National Park
by Kinan Faham on Jan.19, 2010, under Hiking, National Parks, Nature, Parks, Travel, photography
Named after the famous Joshua Tree, the national park is located in the Southeastern Corner of California and is surrounded by three towns: TwentyNine Palms, Joshua Tree and Yucca Valley. I saw signs for all three of them on my way from Palm Springs.
The sky was California quality blue and the views were just breathtaking. I drove through many spots starting at the Northern Entrance passing through Jumbo Rocks, Skull Rock, Sheep Pass, Ryan mountain, Keys Ranch and finally Barker Dam loop just as the sun was about to set. You can see the dam in the pictures. Colors of the sunset were different from any other place I have been to in this trip. Temperatures were in the low 60s & suffice to say, I am still suffering from a trauma since I came back to CT!
This is the last post for this trip, 15 days in heaven.
Day 3: Getty Center
by Kinan Faham on Jan.18, 2010, under Arts, Events, Travel, photography
Getty Center is a must visit destination for lovers of the art in Los Angeles. When I was there back in December, two of their exhibits were mandatory to visit(simply because they were photography related!):
Irving Penn was known for his meticulous attention to details, what better to bring out this talent than to shoot workers in different trades in Paris, London and New York in their daily uniforms with their tools and posing as if they were doing the job?
The best photos of this collection belonged to coalmen from London and New York, fully dressed and covered(hands, faces..etc) with black in an indication to what they used to deal with on a daily basis. My bias may be based on the fact that my great great great great grand father was a coal man in Syria(my last name is translated to Coal Miner in Arabic after all)!
You can click on the link above to see some samples from the exhibit.
One more stop was their Migrations Of The Mind exhibit where they brought different manuscripts on the topics of biology, medicine & science in general.
The following photos were taken in the outdoors of the vast Getty center, you could see the Pacific ocean(check the sunset collection) from a distance!
Day 6:Griffith Park, the ultimate in Urban Hiking
by Kinan Faham on Jan.16, 2010, under Hiking, Nature, Parks, Travel, meetup, photography
This was a hike with LA downtown hiking group in Griffith Park which could be dubbed as “Central Park of the west coast” in terms of its location in the center of a major city and the sheer size. The trails we followed can be seen here.
Day 6: Queen Mary, Long Beach
by Kinan Faham on Jan.15, 2010, under Travel, photography
This is the second time I dropped by Long Beach this visit. I took a few panoramic frames of the famous Queen Mary both close-up and from a distance.
End of Day 2: Taking the Hill by surprise!
by Kinan Faham on Jan.15, 2010, under Hiking, Parks, Travel, meetup, photography
I planned to join the Signal Hill Hiking Club on the evening of day 2 but ran late and missed the group. Signal Hill reminded me of some allies in Damascus where my grand parents lived and had a nice view of the entire city. Unlike Damascus, the Long Beach version had a ton of oil rigs(even between the houses) which explains the statues of two oil workers captured in many photos!
Day 7: Oh! Great Pacific, why I love San Diego
by Kinan Faham on Jan.15, 2010, under Hiking, Nature, Parks, Travel, photography
After Crestridge Ecological Reserve hike with San Diego’s hiking meetup group, I thought I’d give Torrey Pines state park a shot!
It was a little cloudy but nothing could deter me from filming or shooting the beauty of San Diego’s beach!
Day 14: Walking Palm Springs, CA
by Kinan Faham on Jan.14, 2010, under Travel, automobiles, photography
It was sunny, 75 degrees. The sky was amazingly blue. Many Harley Davidsons and antique cars on the street. I walked along South Palm Canyon Drive gazing at the plants, cars, bikes…Depressed that I will be going back to snow in two days, that did not prevent me from capturing the beauty of the town!
Meet the Sailors, Palm Springs edition!

P.S: Jaguar ROCKS!
Day 13: From Death Valley To Palm Springs, what I saw on the road
by Kinan Faham on Jan.14, 2010, under Travel, photography
On Day 13, I left Death Valley and headed to Palm Springs using Highway 127. I wanted to capture Amargosa Opera house before leaving. On my way, I saw a mining field near Tecopa Hot Springs so I made a stop to capture the place!
Day 11: BadWater Basin, Last moonrise of 2009
by Kinan Faham on Jan.13, 2010, under Hiking, National Parks, Nature, Parks, Travel, meetup, photography
After hiking Golden Canyon, we hit Badwater for a few while the sun was still shining.
On our way back to Texas Springs Campground, the moon had started ascending the sky and was well worth ending the year with.
