Last Saturday was the 8th Annual Arab American Cultural Street Festival which is the official kick-off to New York City’s Annual Arab Heritage Week. NAAP-NY has been organizing this street festival since its inception.
The festivities included an interesting and diverse array of live music & dance, food(of course) and several businesses/activities from all parts of the city and the Arab world.
My Heart Is In The Highlands
by Kinan Faham on Jul.13, 2010, under Hiking, Nature, Parks, Travel, meetup, photography
Inspired by the adaptation of Robert Burns’ song for organ by Arvo Part, this was a hike to Mount Taurus on the Hudson river Valley with a hiking meetup group last Sunday in the early AM. The video clip was shot along Metro North Hudson Line and the photos were taken around the white and yellow trails.
Walking Down The Memory Lane
by Kinan Faham on Jul.06, 2010, under Hiking, Parks, Walking, meetup, photography
This was a hike(or walk in the woods) with the Hartford Area Hiking Meetup group. The trail we took is called "Indian Council Caves Trail" and is located in Barkhamsted, CT. It got its name because of its glacier boulders(towards the end of the video clip) with cave-like pockets. Many native american artifacts have been found around the area but it is debated if it was used for council meetings. Most of the pictures show the typical New England Summer where green is the color of the day.

A walk around Astoria in Queens last Saturday with NYC PhotoGs meetup group.
The venture was characterized by a mixture of good food, good mood and a plenty of things to shoot!

by Kinan Faham on Apr.04, 2010, under Hiking, Nature, Parks, Travel, meetup, photography
The Hartford Area Hiking meetup group took it to Kent Falls yesterday with Larry leading. This was one of the easy hikes with many scenic views of Kent Falls State Park. We made a few stops along the red trail and Larry shared his information on the plants and history of the area(can be seen in video clip 2 in the playlist below).
Streets Of Philadelphia
by Kinan Faham on Apr.01, 2010, under National Parks, Travel, meetup, photography
This was an outing with NYC Brainiacs to Philly on March 27th 2010. In this clip, you will see the streets of Philly around Washington Square before a ranger from the National Park Service takes us on a tour of Pennsylvania State House(commonly known as Independence Hall) where the Declaration Of Independence and The United States constitution was signed.
And here is a series of three video clips captured on that day
Thomas Edison: A closer look at his life and work
by Kinan Faham on Mar.29, 2010, under National Parks, Travel, meetup
This was a day trip with NYC Brainiacs last Sunday. We spent a few hours touring the private mansion and later the lab complex(Invention factory) in West Orange, NJ.
I was not aware of the vast number of inventions that Thomas Edison had worked on. It was mind boggling to hear all the stories from the tour guides and how different America and the world had become because of this genius. I managed to capture ten video clips in total for that day:
1- Touring the greenhouse
2- Inside the Mansion’s first floor: Henry Pedder Library, reception & drawing, indoors conservatory & Dining rooms
3- Inside the Mansion’s first floor: Family Den, Servants quarter, private den and master bedroom on the second floor
4- Second Floor:Theodore Edison’s room, VIP guest suite, Anderson’s painting(The Morning After the Ball) and then Black Maria at the Lab complex
5- Thomas Edison’s Building 5: The Library, first(main hall in the factory), second(Precision machines workshop) and third(Phonograph collection) floors
6- Live Phonograph Demo(featuring Jonathan Wolfson with his remix of “Mary had a little lamb”)
7- The Chemistry lab:
You may watch the full series in the order it was filmed through the following playlist:
End of Day 2: Taking the Hill by surprise!
by Kinan Faham on Jan.15, 2010, under Hiking, Parks, Travel, meetup, photography
I planned to join the Signal Hill Hiking Club on the evening of day 2 but ran late and missed the group. Signal Hill reminded me of some allies in Damascus where my grand parents lived and had a nice view of the entire city. Unlike Damascus, the Long Beach version had a ton of oil rigs(even between the houses) which explains the statues of two oil workers captured in many photos!
Day 7: Crestridge Ecological Reserve in El Cajon, CA
by Kinan Faham on Jan.08, 2010, under Hiking, Nature, Parks, Travel, meetup, photography
Another (shorter) hike with Take A Hike! meetup group that took place on the 27th of December 2009. The purpose was to discover this remote park located in El Cajon, CA.
Those who intended to burn Christmas calories probably gained more as we headed to Tylers of Texas BBQ house for lunch afterwards!
Day 4:Cowles Mountain hike
by Kinan Faham on Jan.08, 2010, under Hiking, Parks, Travel, meetup, photography
This is a hike with a meetup group in Santee, CA which is a few miles drive from San Diego.
We started at Big Rock park, went up Cowles then Pyle’s peaks before heading back to Big Rock. As you’d expect, Southern Californian weather is ideal for such ventures.
