Bowerbird presents: Keroaän = Ian M Fraser + Reed Evan Rosenberg

KEROAÄN is a collaborative research project between Ian M Fraser and Reed Evan Rosenberg exploring composition of electronic music by artificial intelligence.

Pieces are diffused in real time with no human intervention whatsoever as the machine agent manipulates the qualities of chosen non-standard synthesis and microsound techniques.

In live diffusions, the machine agent additionally controls laser apertures and an array of strobe lighting which collectively act as a visual projection of the structure of its performance.

A distinctly non-human logic pervades the resultant arrangements of chaotic sounds and high-intensity lighting, presenting an immersive, alien environment.

The performance took place at The Rotunda in Philadelphia, PA.

Membrane Channel presents: Jesse Kudler + Ethan Tripp at Vox Populi

The Philadelphia duo performed a set of their improvised electronic music at Vox Populi.

Jesse Kudler is a musician, composer and sound artist working in improvisation, collaboration, and site-specificity.
Guitar, electronics, radios, tapes, recordings and text.

Ethan Tripp loves music and listens to loads of it, especially audio phenomena that are not as easily categorized. He builds instruments, both acoustic and electronic, and makes music in various forms.

Aaron Zarzutzki (Chicago)

Aaron Zarzutzki is an improviser of various sorts. He works primarily with misuse and perversion of objects and systems. Virtuosity, volatility, futility, and capability are thought of. Zarzutzki currently lives, works, and plays in Chicago.

Richard Kamerman (New York)

Richard Kamerman has been breaking electronics and crashing computers while trying to coax interesting and unpredictable sounds out of them for over a decade. Occasionally, he has also presented himself as a more serious composer of re-performable written music. Keywords: amplification, magnification, obfuscation, systems design, game theory, patterns, human error, accident, failure. Although a firm believer in the axiom that “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure,” he ceased collecting his instruments from piles of junk left on the curb several years ago, fearing he might bring home bedbugs. He additionally runs the small-press music label Copy For Your Records.

Bhob Rainey (Philadelphia)

Bhob Rainey is an award-winning composer / performer, saxophonist, and sound designer. In 1998, with trumpeter Greg Kelley, he founded the duo Nmperign, which quickly became a model for a new phase of non-idiomatic improvisation often referred to as “lowercase” or “EAI” (Electroacoustic Improvisation). In 2000 he founded The BSC, an improvising large ensemble, in which he developed techniques for an improvisational discipline that were eventually outlined in his 2011 publication, Manual. Throughout the late 1990’s and early 2000’s he performed globally and collaborated with numerous improvisers of both the (then) current and previous generations, including Axel Dörner, Andrea Neumann, Günter Müller, Michel Doneda, Lê Quan Ninh, and many others.

By the mid-2000’s, while continuing to work in the realm of improvisation, Rainey began to produce electronic and algorithmic works. He spent five years collaborating with German composer Ralf Wehowsky (RLW) on the 2007 release, I don’t think I can see you tonight, which, along with Nmperign and Jason Lescalleet’s Love Me Two Times (2006), established him as a formidable electronic composer who synthesizes streams of Musique Concréte, computer music, and improvisation.

Throughout his career, Rainey has sought out cross-discipline collaborations, working with dancers, filmmakers, and theater companies. From 2012-2014 he worked with theater company New Paradise Labs to create The Adults, which premiered at the 2014 Philadelphia Fringe Festival to much acclaim. He created the soundtrack to Leah Ross’s 2013 film, Levitate, which premiered that year at the Rooftop Film Festival in New York City, and he performed live in Jungwoong Kim’s and Marion Ramirez’s site-specific dance work, Capsized, at the National Asian American Theater Festival in Philadelphia in 2014.

Ah ee oo eh oh: Id M Theft Able

Id M Thfft Able(AKA I’d M Theft Able) is an improvising vocalist/frictist/texturalist (amongst other things) from Portland, ME.

He has played at various festivals, bars, living rooms, bathrooms, beaches, galleries, book stores, mansions, basements, birthday parties, across the United States, Canada, and Europe.

Fire Museum Presents Audrey Chen + Flandrew Fleisenberg + Margaret Rorison

Fire Museum Presents the Audrey Chen, Flandrew Fleisenberg and Margaret Rorison trio.

Audrey Chen has been trying to defy conventions all along first by choosing music as a career in a family of material scientists and then by moving away from classical and conservatory music to start her negotiations with sound & discover a more individually honest aesthetic. Chen uses the cello, voice and analog electronics and creates her own narrative & non-linear stories for her audiences.

Flandrew Fleisenberg plays percussion on an assortment of everyday ephemera and modified drum parts that he has reduced and eroded through a process of “play it and break it”.

A recent migrant from Boston, Fleisenberg is busily planting roots across Philadelphia co-curating the H-O-T improvised music and dance series as well ad hoc events around town. Fleisenberg has been involved in the improvised and creative music community since 2001 performing solo, in ad-hoc improv groupings and in set projects. Ongoing collaborators include: Josh Jefferson (Skinny Vinny), Neil Feather, Bonnie Kane/ Joo Won Park (I’m with Joo Won) and id m theftable.

Margaret Rorison has been making films since 2011. Before she discovered the magic of filmmaking, she spent most of her energy on poetry, painting and photography. Her current work often develops from extensive walks through rural and urban landscapes, combining memories, field recordings and text. She is interested in the potentials of storytelling through the use of live projection and sound.

This performance took place at The First Banana in Fishtown, Philadelphia.

Lead Pipe

Lead Pipe is a sound artist who moved to Philly from Austin in 2013. Her soundscapes incorporate field recordings, drones, infinite loops, synthesizers, effects pedals, drum machines and distorted vocals.
