Perilous Architecture: Dan Blacksberg Trio

Ars Nova Workshop, in partnership with the Archer Spade Performance Series presented the record release show for Perilous Architecture: Dan Blacksberg Trio’s latest brain child.

Dan Blacksberg, Trombone
Matt Engle, Bass
Mike Szekely, Drums

In the Dan Blacksberg Trio, the innovative and genre-defying trombonist brings an expansive and creative new vision to the cutting-edge jazz traditions of pioneers like Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry, and Albert Ayler.
Blacksberg has penned a set of music that pushes at the technical and timbral limits of his instrument, opening up into far-reaching sounds worlds while maintaining a melodic rootsiness.

Backed up by the powerful rhythm of Matt Engle (Shot X Shot) on bass, and Mike Szekely (Anthony Braxton Quartet) on drums, the Trio creates a driving mixture of noise, chromatic lyricism, and everything in between…

Perilous Architecture is available in Vinyl through No Business Records.

Or digitally through Blacksberg’s Bandcamp page.

Invocation

Philadelphia trombonist and composer Dan Blacksberg is rapidly establishing himself as one of the city’s premiere musicians, renowned as one of the leading trombonists in the world of klezmer.

Dan is making a name for himself across many genres in Philadelphia and beyond. For his opening performance for Bop Kaballah at The Little Shul, he played a short solo set based on his explorations into old Ashkenazic cantorial music.

When The Trombone Speaks: Dan Blacksberg

Local legend Dan Blacksberg is rapidly emerging as a new leading voice on the trombone.

With musical activity that spans avant-garde jazz, modern classical music, improvised music and klezmer, Dan brings a burly, rough-edged sound intended to push at the technical and textural extremes of his instrument.

Based in Philadelphia, Dan leads a variety of groups, such as the Dan Blacksberg Trio and Electric Simcha, and co-leads groups such as Archer Spade, the New York/Philadelphia avant-jazz quartet Bird Fly Yellow, and the terror-improv group Psychotic Quartet.

In addition, Dan has also performed with Joe Morris, Joe Maneri, Danilo Perez, Gene Coleman, and is a founding member of Anthony Braxton’s Tri-Centric Orchestra.

Trio = Erik Ruin + Archer Spade(Nick Millevoi & Dan Blacksberg)

Archer Spade and Erik Ruin weaved sight and sound in a collective improvisation using Electric and Acoustic guitar, trombone, and tapes; providing the soundtrack for layered images of disaster – both elemental forces gone awry, and societal breakdown- that splintered and shook into abstract form and color as Ruin manipulated piles of paper cuts and painted films on the surface of the overhead projector.

Erik Ruin is a Providence-based print-maker, shadow-puppeteer, founding member of the Justseeds Artists’ Cooperative, and co-creator of the recent book Paths Toward Utopia: Graphic Explorations of Everyday Anarchism (w/ Cindy Milstein, PM Press, 2012).

Archer Spade is an experimental chamber group comprised of trombonist Dan Blacksberg and electric guitarist Nick Millevoi.

Equally capable as composers, improvisers, and interpreters, Blacksberg and Millevoi are redefining and expanding the traditional composer/performer relationship in contemporary chamber music. From their base in Philadelphia, the duo is developing a dynamic repertoire of new works commissioned from contemporary composers and pieces composed by Blacksberg and Millevoi themselves.

Archer Spade is a new model for the creation and presentation of new music; a small, versatile, and efficient ensemble of multi-talented artists/interpreters designed to meet and reflect the current demands of innovative new music…
